To all COPC Cowboy Shooters.
All is good on the cowboy frontier. Our cowboy shooters continue to bring back medals and placings. Two of us attended the North Islands Champs in June in Wanganui. Night Shooter got first place in duelist and Lindis Ranger got 1st in gunfighter.
Over the winter the Sunday shoots continued as the weather did not get that cold.
Our monthly matches on the 2nd sunday are still being held, which has attributed to our winnings at away matches.
We started to take on the ispc section, giving them a taste of cowboy stages with their guns and vice versa. I think they realise that shooting four guns is more fun, but they need to learn how to count.
My role as section director for CASunder PNZ took me to the 50th anniversary celebrations in Auckland recently, it was definitely an eye opener but great to meet and talk to other shooters from the different sections. One thing we all have in common is, how do we protect our sport.
A big thanks must to Mac Tuckett for diving in and taking control at certain times to organize Sunday shoots, sometimes both roles get on top of me.
In the not distant future we may be visiting the Invercargill club as they have had an influx of new cowboy shooters, that we are helping to bring up to speed, it could be a good relationship for the South Island clubs.
I have thanked this person so much in the past as his continued advice to the section and club could not go unnoticed, so a big thank you to John Holley.
So let's keep this club a rockin and work together to secure the future of shooting in NZ.

Cas Annual Report

28 th April
Over the last year the cas section has been doing well. We have started doing monthly shoots held on the second Sunday of each month. By doing this not only are we having more shoots but the level of shooting has increased immensely. It gives our new shooters a chance to experience match conditions, because for some, getting to an away shoot is sometimes hard.
All of our CAS shooters have done well in competition, with all that attend taking away a placing. What has benefited the new shooters is the experience level that has come to the club from the shooters who have traveled overseas, bringing back all the new tricks of the trade.
In light of recent events I encourage everyone to attend away shoots and support other clubs. To all CAS shooters, you are able to alter your file to only hold ten, weather this is done by yourself or a Gunsmith get it done, because if you end up handing them in getting another one in the country in a short time by not be the case.
Our monthly shoots will continue next month as it will be the last practice we will get before the North Islands at the end of May.
On another note progress at the club is moving along with plans to increase our ranges so as we can hold bigger events like the wild bunch national and the CAS nationals. We are very lucky to have this range and the ability to run such events as other ranges around the country are finding it difficult to continue. ie having more restrictions because of urban sprawl and council restrictions.
In July the CAS section are holding a Winter shoot called WinterRange, this will be a three day shoot starting on Friday and running to Sunday. More to come on this later on.
That's all from me, may you have a good years shooting, and most of all stay safe.

What is CAS

Cowboy Action Shooting, a sport created in California in 1982, is run under international rules set be 'The Single Action Shooting Society' of the USA.
Cowboy Action Shooting recreates life in the Wild West by shooting a course of fire designed to depict an old west historical shootout, a movie scene or just someone's idea of the wild west.
Various target set-ups are made to resemble a western scene and scores are made according to elapsed time and accuracy in hitting the targets. There is a penalty of five seconds added to your elapsed time for each missed shot, and failure to shoot and move through the stage in the specified order will also cause a time penalty. The winning shooter will have a combination of the lower elapsed time and the most hits in the correct order. There is no advantage to missing fast. A shot timer automatically records your total time at your last shot.
To add to this fantasy sport, all shooters are required to wear some form of period dress. Long pants (or dresses for the ladies), boots, cowboy hat and shirts with long sleeves will do. For firearms you will need two single action revolvers, a lever action or pump action rifle (in pistol cal) and a side-by-side shotgun (without ejectors) or a model 1897-pump action shotgun (with exposed hammer). Guns must be of pre 1900 design but modern versions like Ruger, Colt clones and Norinco 97's are acceptable. You will also need holsters and a carrier or belt for shot shells. All bullets are lead and have maximum velocity requirements.
When starting out you will find other shooters are happy to help you out by loaning gear and guns. This is a great way of finding out what type of guns and holsters suit you.
This is a fun, exciting family sport that has a shooting category for you!
